School Tax Plan Splits California Officials and Teachers

A new county wide school tax proposal would raise extra funds by taxing the childless wealthy, shifting $21 million to education. Gov. Brown and State Supt Roy E. Simson back it, while opposition comes from the wealthy and temporarily from the California Teachers Association. The plan aims to boost per pupil funding from 234 to 239 for elementary and 324 to 340 for high schools, with possible earmarks for gifted and handicapped students. Brown remained noncommittal, saying the $21 million is the start and details depend on the legislative session.
