Why My Lai Survivors Don't Testify

FT BENNING Ga UP I reports question why survivors did not testify at Lt William Calley Jr trial. Sources cite Saigon government cooperation issues, restrictions on leaving Vietnam, and defense consent requirements for depositions, plus uncertainty over who counts as a survivor in the hamlet hit on March 16, 1968.

Army clears 16th My Lai soldier and drop murder counts

FT McPherson GA UPI reports the Army dismissed murder charges against Spec 4 William Doherty of Boston, the 16th US soldier cleared in the My Lai massacre. The ruling cites insufficient evidence after a review, prior to Doherty's discharge. The move follows a decision not to immediately court-martial Pvt Max Hutson of Attica Indiana, as another inquiry continues. Separate cases show 12 soldiers charged in the killings, with some cleared, others awaiting trial, and Lt William Calley Jr. facing possible death.

Examined Survivor Claims At Calley Trial Probable Enemies

Testimony from alleged survivors is unreliable due to lack of town records and possible exile of leaders. Witnesses at the Calley trial suggest those present were likely Viet Cong or sympathizers. A defense attorney notes any survivor testimony would require legal vouching, which neither side was prepared to provide.
