Port of Los Angeles unveils bulk loader for trade expansion
Consul General Toshiro Shimanouchi praised the new 5 million dollar bulk loader at the Port of Los Angeles, designed to boost trade with Japan. The Osumi Maru shipped 50 000 tons of pellets to Japanese steel mills as NM and Co. secured a six year contract guaranteeing at least one million long tons annually to Mitsubishi Shoji Kaisha. The facility will load 35 vessels yearly, with 35 000 to 63 000 ton capacities, funded by Harbor Department capital improvements. The 1 1 month project completed December 15 1965 is expected to generate 147 333 yearly. The loader handles 3000 tons per hour and can handle other bulk goods.
