Laird May Fill Gap If Richardson Isn’t Confirmed
Defense Secretary Melvin Laird could stay at the Pentagon beyond Saturday if the Senate delays confirming Elliot L. Richardson as his successor before Inauguration Day. Richardson’s nomination cleared the Armed Services Committee but faces possible full-Senate delays over Vietnam war opposition. If delayed, Richardson may take office after Laird’s planned departure, leaving Laird in place briefly.
