Prisoner Holds Guard at Walpole Prison for 50 Hours

Robert Daigle, 37, of Worcester, seized guard John Waldie at knifepoint in a Walpole state prison cell, using a blanket to cover his head, and compelled the guard to aid his TV interview. After 50 hours, with promises of reform and a news conference, Daigle emerged as reporters waited. He outlined grievances over prison conditions and guard brutality, demanding inmate work in dining halls, an end to beatings and searches, furloughs, and reduced population, while Superintendent Douglas Wingant called the demands unreasonable.
