Budget Cuts Hit Long Beach State Faculty and Classes
Long Beach State announces a 10 percent reduction equal to one million dollars, with class sections reduced across six schools proportional to faculty. Full-time staff face no layoffs, but many part-time instructors may lose work. Registration II could limit many new students to partial programs as about 2,000 incoming students face uncertain schedules. Other state colleges report 300 to 400 classes cut if part-time hires cannot fill gaps.

Mayor Lindsay and Chief Codd say the department remains fully protected with senior officers patrolling critical areas while negotiations continue. The walkout follows a court ruling on a multimillion-dollar pay issue and includes a broad urging for an end to the stoppage. The situation prompted the mayor to order continuous negotiations with police, fire, and sanitation unions, with unclear prospects for a court order.
