Market Falls as Mideast Ties and Energy Crisis Spur Best
New York stocks reversed from early gains to close mixed as investors weighed Middle East tensions and energy policy. The Dow Jones industrial average fell about 130 points to 810.18 with many issues showing small declines while others advanced slightly. Dealers blamed Egypt's rejection of parts of a disengagement plan and warnings from William E. Simon on the energy crisis, leaving traders cautious and on the sidelines awaiting clearer economic signals.

Car device claims fuel savings and lower pollution
John Self and Henry Markley in Warrensburg claim a homemade 10 year old Fort-4 turbine muffler device boosts gas mileage by about seven miles per gallon and reduces exhaust pollution. They installed a gas turbine on the rear axle, piping unmuffled exhaust into the turbine to gain 16 to 18 extra horsepower. They filed a patent claim and are testing the device on ambulance service vehicles while awaiting patent outcomes.
