Police records recount a complex plan to hire a hit man against Paul Popeil, involving a Douglas Aircraft Co. machinist, a 32 year old Cerritos man, a paid $400 front money, $60,000 in diamonds, a 12 gauge gun, and a staged murder at a North Long Beach scene. The scheme spiraled from early meetings to an undercover tape operation and a final police capture at Harbor Island.
