U S troop levels fall in Vietnam to twenty four thousand
U S forces in South Vietnam declined to 24 000 last week with the departure of 100 men, lowering the total to the lowest in eight years. Other allied forces also fell by 500 to 35 000 with the withdrawal of a South Korean contingent.
Service ranks seen to rise before Christmas holidays
The U S military warns service numbers may increase slightly in coming weeks due to abnormal withdrawals ahead of the Christmas holiday. A source said estimates were off and that 13,600 soldiers, 4,50 sailors, 1,200 Marines, 7,600 airmen and 100 Coast Guardsmen were in South Vietnam as of last Thursday, their lowest since January 1985.
