Save Shipyard Rally Urges Action By Local Leaders
Invitations telegraphed to civic and business leaders in Long Beach and nearby communities call for an emergency meeting at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Lafayette Hotel. The Long Beach Chamber of Commerce says the Naval Shipyard faces possible closure with the Navy’s funds not expanding and action needed before March 31, end of the 1958 session. Admiral Ralph James warns of greater subsidence than projected, noting land near the yard has sunk about 25 feet and could reach 38 to 43 feet if left unrepressed.
