An explosion wrecked a business residential building in Salch France, killing 16 people. About a dozen others were hospitalized with injuries as windows shattered within a quarter mile radius of the six story structure.
Heavy seas and winds to 60 miles per hour sank three boats off Catalina Island. The 82-foot sloop Ka jaine and the houseboat Paso del Mar went down with no injuries reported. A 50-foot Sea Quest sank 15 miles west of Tijuana after seven aboard were rescued. Isthmus Cove Agency crews aided rescuers through the predawn hours.
Sacramento, UPI Kenneth J. Federer, 40, son of former Lt. Gov. Harold J. Powers, died at Sacramento Medical Center from bullet wounds suffered when he surprised two jail escapers in his ranch home. Federer was shot December 18. his leg was later amputated. Escapers Peter Goodridge, 21, and Michael Logson, 20, fled Elk Grove facility by tunneling beneath the fence and were captured hours later after the attack.
Joseph P. Busch Jr will take the oath today at noon in the Hall of Justice to become Los Angeles County district attorney with a $40,644 annual salary. He vows to personally handle many cases to stay connected with administration of criminal justice and to explain his positions on sensitive issues while maintaining fair treatment and justice for all. Busch, named the 32nd district attorney by the Board of Supervisors, succeeds Eivelle J. Younger, who becomes state attorney general. A separate note reports a thief stole a $700 walkie talkie from Bruce King’s car during his New Year’s Day swearing-in as New Mexico’s 21st governor.
Los Angeles County inspectors on New Year’s Day spotted 104 violations at area airports under California’s new jet emission rule. Only one airline sought variances, with others awaiting federal preemption and a 180 day window for federal regulation. Robert Chass notes 1975 timing for state control based on past federal auto performance.
