New York Strikes Hurt Transit but City Fights On
Public and private schools closed as the city faced a massive transit strike. Mayor Lindsay and Police Commissioner Broderick urged motorists to stay off Manhattan roads while forecasts warned the disruption could extend beyond today. Transit costs were projected at hundreds of millions, with buses and subways largely idle and helicopters grounded. But residents adapted, firms reported sales losses, and officials pledged tough action on car entry as the crisis continued.
