The 86th Congress begins with all House members and newly elected Senators on payroll at noon. Voting rights start after Wednesday opening ceremonies. House composition shifts to 283 Democrats 153 Republicans with Alaska adds 9 Democrats. Senate margins rise to 64 Democrats 34 Republicans from 49 17.
Washington reports movement toward a possible settlement in the 15 day American Airlines strike. National Mediation Board chair Leverett Edwards called progress during a recess as negotiators planned to reconvene with government mediation. About 1,500 pilots and co pilots are walkout participants amid hopes of a deal mirroring Eastern Air Lines’ 38 day settlement.
Miami Beach hosts two Republican convention site selection panelists who deemed the facilities excellent. Committee member Richard Cooper of Rochester, New York, said he would be inclined to vote to hold the convention in a state that voted Republican. Florida backed Eisenhower in 1952 and 1956 and Miami Beach also seeks the Democratic national convention.
