Nixon ties to oilmen assailed in energy crisis
Representative Les Aspin charged oil interests heavily funded Nixon’s 1972 campaign, hindering presidential action on energy. He released a 58 page study listing 413 oil company directors and executives who contributed, with Gulf Oil as the top giver. The report notes major corporate gifts later returned. Census Bureau later estimated 241.7 million Americans in 1973, a 1.4 million increase from 1972.
