Army Forms Two Atomic Support Units
The Army will form its first two atomic support commands this Friday. One, All Transportable, will be at Fort Bragg North Carolina and a medium command at Fort Hood Texas. The Air Transportable Command will center on Honest John rockets with intelligence, infantry, engineers, service units and a small aircraft element. The medium command will be larger with Corporal guided missiles and up to four Honest John battalions, plus larger service units and a cavalry battalion with fixed wings and helicopters for air and ground reconnaissance. The plan aims to speed atomic unit formation by reducing regular divisions from 24 to 18 and will deploy units with larger Army commands after testing. General Lauris Norstad said he hoped to receive some new atomic units for Allied Europe.
