Leader Leaves Post After YMCA Service in Ethiopia

Maron Ludwig, a 2 yearold YMCA career professional, returns to the United States after 13 years in Ethiopia where he rose from program director for physical education to National General Secretary. In 1987 a protege took over, and Ludwig became an adviser. He recalls Addis Ababa’s ascent from two boys clubs to 102, with about 170000 monthly participants, and notes the local Ethiopian budget funded 95 percent locally. Ludwig discusses linguistic hurdles, cultural differences, and the rewards of the experience, calling it a real, challenging, and valuable chapter.
