Knight Opens Bid for Senate Nominaton in California
San Francisco Governor Goodwin Knight opened his campaign for the Republican nomination to the U.S. Senate criticizing Rep. Clair Engle who seeks the Democratic nomination. Knight spoke to 1,000 supporters at a $100 dinner in the Sheraton Palace Hotel, denouncing Engle’s “narrow provincial outlook” and sectionalism. He accused Engle of attempting to claim San Francisco’s Hetch Hetchy rights and of injuring California with Colorado River water policies. Knight warned of impact on California homes, farms, and industries if Glen Canyon の Hoover Dam projects reduce power. He argued Engle’s actions reflect his personal free enterprise philosophy and said a fair, statewide water solution must be found.
