He conveyed the President’s thanks for the church bulletin and for the congregation’s thoughtfulness in offering prayers for freedom-loving citizens, welfare, and a peace with justice.
In Minneapolis Mirvin H. Kline, former Minneapolis mayoral candidate and executive of the Sister Kenny Foundation, pleads not guilty to mail fraud charges over fund raising. He posts 2800 dollar bond and is released as six codefendants from Chicago fund-raising firms enter innocent pleas at arraignment last week.
Russell Herbart Butcher son of Mr and Mrs Herbert Butcher Sr of Wall will serve as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Alaska and Canada. An apostasy farewell is planned at his parents home Sunday afternoon followed by services at Lekewood Third Ward Chapel in Bellflower. He graduated from Bellflower High School in 1960 and has worked for Market Basket.
Long Beach churches observe Council of Churches Sunday on February 25 to highlight cooperative work. Delegates will present Council programs and ministers will emphasize its significance during public worship across 48 member churches. The council, founded 1953 and incorporated 1957, runs Weekday Christian Education Released time and hospital chaplaincy among four major activities.
Calvary Presbyterian Church and Temple Sinai plan National Brotherhood Week events with joint services. Dr. Wilbur Brankling delivered the evening message on The Hand of Brotherly. Rabbi Sidney Guthman will speak Christianity and Its Notes. Songs include Mozart Aye Verum Corpus and Kathleen Stewart soprano will perform Low Lovely Are Thy Dwellings.
All Saints Episcopal Church on Colorado and Termin Avenue prepares for a historic ordination Monday February 26 at 1030 am. The churchs curate Rev Donald Roy ler will be ordained priest by Rt Rev Francis Evie Bloy bishop of Los Angeles. The event marks the first ordination at the church since its 1929 founding with a host of clergy including Rev James F Carroll Rev Morris and others participating under Bishop Bloy. Roger will celebrate his first Eucharist on Sunday March 4 with additional clergy from St Luke's St Thomas and Claret churches assisting.
Bay Shore Community Church invites congregants to hear Dr. Jesse F. Perrin superintendent of the Congregational Conference of Southern California and the Southwest speak on "Strong Men" at 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. at 5160 The Toledo Ave. Perrin notes 13 years of conference service during a period of rapid church expansion.
In Flemingsburg Kentucky Clover Hill Methodist has just one member, Miss Oltie Spencer, who serves as treasurer, steward, trustee, and congregational organizer. She also pays the salaries of the minister and cemetery caretaker. The church had about 15 members ten years ago, but families moved away and interest waned. For eight years she has been the sole worshiper, though services are led by Rev. Harry Oldacker twice monthly at the adjacent Gay church on land Miss Spencer owns with her sister Mary who never joined or attends.
In Sacramento a three day western area gathering of the National Council of United Presbyterian Men opened Friday with about 1,500 delegates. The event is one of five area conventions in February and March by the denomination, which has 400,000 members, with delegates expected from Montana Idaho Washington Oregon California Utah Nevada New Mexico.
In the Vatican the pope signed an apostolic constitution highlighting Latin as essential for clergy. The document, a high form of papal legislation, was published in Osservatore Romano in Vatican City on Friday.
Gospel singer Bill Harmon of Kansas City will be presented in a musical concert Sunday at 7 30 pm at the First Assembly of God of Lakewood Candlewood Street 0022 I. Harmon, noted for songs such as I Want to Do What He Wants Me to Do Reach Out and Touch the Lord and Ive Got Heaven in My Soul, accompanies himself on piano and composes the music he sings.
