Doak Builds Convertible VTO Plane for Army Tests
Doak Aircraft Co of Torrance will begin ground tests Tuesday on a vertical takeoff and landing plane for the Army Transportation Corps. The craft uses swiveling wingtip propellers enclosed in ducts to allow vertical takeoffs and landings while remaining horizontal in flight. It needs no airport for takeoffs, and may also operate as a conventional aircraft if airports are available. The Army seeks longer range and faster speed for observation and rescue, with commercial adaptation in view.
