Leisure and Wealth Promise 22-Hour Week by 1985
The Southern California Research Council foresees Americans could work a 22 hour week, take 25 weeks of vacation, retire at 38, or earn nearly double by 1985. The 90 page study notes leisure currently uses about a quarter of the 110 million residents' annual time and spends about $10 billion on leisure activities in Southern California, with 1 in 5 dollars spent on leisure goods and services. The council warns if gains are not paired with attitude shifts and wiser use of leisure, longer retirements and shorter workweeks may bring mixed results. It urges expanding outdoor facilities libraries arts and adult education while noting traffic, affluence, and loss of open space threaten the leisure environment.
