Command Change In Coast Guard District In Long Beach
The commander of the 11th Coast Guard District in Long Beach has been promoted to chief of staff to the commandant Adm Willard Smith in Washington Rear Adm Thomas R Sargent 53 who has led the post since May 23 1967 will leave in mid May His successor will be Rear Adm Charles Tighe now commander of the Coast Guards 9th District in Cleveland Ohio The admiral announced Monday at the Armed Services YMCA monthly Committee of Management meeting where he serves prior to this post Sargent was chief of operations to Rear Adm Albert J Carpenter He is a 29 year Coast Guard veteran born in London England and holds the Legion of Merit for establishing navigational systems in Southeast Asia in 1965 He was awarded the Bronze Star in World War II while commanding the Navy frigate USS Sandusky during the Philippines campaign.

Engineering Days Open House At Long Beach
Special attention will be given Southland high school students during California State College at Long Beach's Engineering Days open house Friday and Saturday. Students attend orientation programs in engineering from 9 a.m. to 1 30 p.m. Saturday. They compete for awards based on pre engineering work. Campus laboratories student projects including a laser beam displays and films will be on public display from noon to 5 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.
