Santa Barbara Channel oil spill effects studied by USC scientist
USC researcher Dr Bernard C Abbott headed a two year study on the Santa Barbara Channel noting long term deterioration of animal and plant life tied to population growth industry and pollution. He cited heavy runoff a century ago that deposited sediment with oil residues and said native species might show more oil tolerance than earlier eras. The study funded by a 240000 Western Oil and Gas Association grant had no reporting restrictions.
