US Weather Bureau says Conelrad will broadcast weather alerts only in major emergencies. The alert signal will precede weather bulletins on the station’s regular frequency during severe storms such as hurricanes tornadoes and flash floods. This marks a shift from its national defense use to emergency weather warning duties.
The bureau said President Carlos Thanez will fly to Washington for a three day official visit in late April 29 or 30. Arrangements with radio and television stations are expected to be completed within months as a storm warning system is to be in effect in most areas.
