Avalon on Santa Catalina Island faces a $6,000 daily fine if it fails to treat sewage by December 31, 1971. Voters rejected a $260,000 bond to fund a treatment plant, leaving the city at risk of a cease and desist order and court action.
The Sierra Club filed suit in Washington DC to block Palmdale International Airport until a full environmental impact study is completed. The action cites NEPA requirements and questions the FAA site approval and $1.1 million in land acquisition funds while noting the airport would affect nearby parks, wildlife refuges, and Los Angeles water resources.
An eight month study by Livington and Blaney Planning Consultants urges Stanford University trustees to create more industrial parks and open space reserves around the Palo Alto campus. Projections show university revenues rising from 19 million to 24 million dollars based on proposals approved at the March meeting. The plan adds 620 acres, mostly in San Mateo County, including 200 acres near Deer Creek and Junipero Serra Freeway, Los Trancos Creek, athletic areas, Deer Creek Golf Course, and the arboretum, with a Williamson Act classification to secure 10 year tax reductions for open space land.
