Palmdale Jetport plan faces conservation protests
Conservation groups protest the Palmdale International Airport project 60 miles north of Los Angeles claiming noise air pollution and traffic disruption. The $900 million site in the Mojave Desert near Palmdale awaits final federal approvals as FAA officials cite cheap land open space and favorable weather despite high elevations and nearby Edwards Air Force Base. Local real estate booms as land values surge from 2,500 to possibly 15,000 per acre amid stalled purchase of acres for the 1980 opening goal.
