Russell Says He Could Have Won If He Ran Dixiecrat
Washington (UPI) Senator Richard B Russell recalled in a television interview that he could have denied Harry Truman the presidency if he had run as the Dixiecrat candidate in 1948. The 72 year old veteran, honored at a Nixon reception, said Thurmond urged him to run before Thurmond accepted the States Rights Party nomination. Russell noted he would have carried the Deep South and perhaps Texas, which could have sent the election to the House. Thurmond carried Alabama Louisiana Mississippi and South Carolina in 1948.
