Shuttle lauded as launch aid and cost cutter
CAPE KENNEDY AL ROSSITER JR reports the deputy director of the space shuttle project says the new craft will nearly eliminate launch risks for unmanned satellites and cut satellite development costs by half in some cases by carrying larger payloads and enabling retrieval for refurbishment. The shuttle, approved by President Nixon, aims to operate in 1979 with a four member crew and to replace expendable rockets, promising significant savings across diverse satellite programs.
