Judge orders Alabama police desegregation by quota
A federal judge ordered the Alabama Department of Public Safety to recruit until the state police are one quarter black, using the 1970 census as the benchmark. NAACP attorney Morris Dees noted the ruling may set a first precedent for using population ratios in desegregation. The current force includes 34 troopers and 300 other officers, with 320 in support roles. The state may appeal, while the NAACP plans its own recruitment push.
