County drops IBM vote recorder pact
County supervisors halted an insurance contract with IBM Corp that kept 42 500 vote recorder instruments on standby. The unused machines cost taxpayers 97000 after new devices failed to arrive in time for the June primary. New machines should be delivered by February 18, officials said. The board also urged legislators not to adopt reapportionment that would alter election boundaries, saying staff cannot handle June polling under new lines.
