The Long Beach Planning Commission discussed controlling gas station numbers and addressing abandoned sites. They reviewed ordinances used by other cities, questioned legality, and proposed a three point plan: zone clarifications, special permits, and operational standards to fit neighborhoods.
Long Beach Building Department issued six permits valued at 542 978 for two eight unit buildings an 81 unit a 12 unit and a 16 unit and a carport to R A Watt Co Inc at 5560 Ackerfield Ave in an annexed area southeast of Cherry Ave and South St The total building valuation for the year in Long Beach now exceeds 12 2 million.

A community fund drive to assist Olina McConnell of Artesia is under way. The Tina McConnell Fund at Bank of America Artesia branch solicits donations to help the widow and mother who has endured burglary losses, injury, a home fire, a man’s death, and the recent loss of her son Lonnie Wayne McConnell in the United Airlines crash. The effort is led by the Artesia Cerritos Junior Women’s Club with local leaders and Kiwanis involvement.
Long Beach planners urge a sign ordinance to balance design uniformity with varied street needs. Ernest Mayer Jr cites Pacific Coast Highway and Belmont Shore as examples, noting sign size should relate to building scale. The commission proposes involving sign firms and amortizing nonconforming signs over time.
