Eisenhower Taps McElroy to Lead Space Programs
President Eisenhower names Defense Secretary McElroy to direct all outer space programs within the Defense Department. He says scientists will craft a plan for outer space achievements, not a strict timetable, while Von Braun and others remain cautious about moon mission timing. Senators oppose a separate civilian space agency, warning it could hinder efforts to compete with Russia.

Eisenhower hints at possible tax cut to aid business
President Eisenhower told reporters at a news conference that a tax cut could be recommended if the expected business upturn fails to materialize by midyear. He said a tax reduction would stimulate business but warned against going too far, noting inflation concerns and a possible continuing recession through the coming months. He appeared pale and hoarse due to a cold contracted after a golf trip to Augusta, and he explained the illness would not hinder his schedule as he answered questions with brief yes or no replies. The president also said the United States is working toward a summit with the Russians, though details remain unsettled.
