Oil spill linked to steering by radar in tanker collision
Harbor official says Oregon Standard and Arizona Standard would have avoided the San Francisco Bay crash if steering by radar had been used. The collision near the Golden Gate left about 498000 gallons of heavy fuel oil spilled, with Standard paying cleanup costs around 2 million dollars and potential ship repair losses near 1 million. The incident occurred after outbound Oregon Standard did not respond to a radio call while the inbound Arizona Standard navigated the channel.
