Moonmen Susceptible to Infection After Apollo 12
Washington medical brief says astronauts Alan Bean and Charles Conrad Jr. carried skin bacteria that intensified in space. Postflight infections from staphylococcus aureus occurred during quarantine and after reentry, with Conrad's chest skin irritation and Bean's forehead wound infection tied to camera impact. The findings come from Dr. Charles A. Kerry at a Washington Heart Association luncheon.

Spaceflight microbes intensify. NASA studies long voyage risks
Avtrenent Richard F. Gordon Jr. did not land on the Snonat and escaped such Pru as Berry notes. NASA scientists have not yet determined why microbial activity appears to intensify under spaceflight conditions, but they tentatively link it to oxygen delivery to spacemen. The phenomenon apparently does not pose a major problem in short Apollo missions but could be critical on longer flights, and NASA medics are intensively studying it.
