Long Beach Teacher Resigns After 38 Years of Service

Mrs. Jnne Petteys Sedgwick, 63, resigns from the Long Beach school system after 38 years reporting that lax discipline, unruly pupils, and lack of parental motivation harmed teaching. She praises Long Beach’s facilities, advocates earlier language instruction, more math via seventh grade, and increased extracurriculars for gifted students, while valuing creative work over rote learning. She began teaching in 1921 in Kansas, moved to Long Beach in 1924, and taught at Jefferson and Lindbergh junior highs before quitting.
