The California Department of Food and Agriculture announced the statewide abolition of minimum retail milk prices starting January 6. Agriculture Director Tim Wallace said prices will be monitored and selling milk below cost remains illegal under unfair trade laws.
Los Gatos producer Rock Bottom Productions faced sales failure for Pet Rocks with an estimated 1 to 100,000 packs reported. Gary Dahl said about a million rocks were sold to stores at two dollars wholesale before the fad faded. Charities like Toys for Tots and hospitals received thousands for Christmas distribution.
California's new prison sentencing law will trigger 1000 to 1500 additional releases in the first year, with total releases around 8000 to 8500 by July. Officials say releases spread over months, reflecting past parole backlogs and recalculation of current prisoners under the new terms. Gov. Brown plans legislation to extend some current sentences.
The Senate Rules Committee named former state senator Fred Farr and San Diego area writer Lois Ewen to the 11 member State Coastal Commission. Environmentalists called both selections strong with Farr noted as a longtime coastal conservation backer and Ewen described as a solid coastal law advocate. The commission will implement California’s tough new coastal conservation law requiring prioritizing developed areas, beach access, and protection of coastal farms and timber lands. The act covers a 1000 yard inland strip and wider zones in urban areas, with some regions extending up to five miles from the beach. The governor and Assembly speaker face final appointments as regional coastal commissions will appoint the remaining six voting members.
