Storm Rips Yawl as 10 Students Stranded Near Bermuda
A Coast Guard 70 foot yawl carrying ten Western Reserve University students and others to Bermuda was hit by a storm 360 miles southeast of New York. The vessel lost sails and pumps, drifted without power, and all aboard bailed as a Coast Guard plane failed to reach them in time. Gordon Van Nes, 28, skipper, was among the deceased, along with his sister and Bermuda passengers. The aloft rescue effort continued as the yawl fought its rough sea ordeal.
