Bells Ringing Man Turns City Night Into Sound
In Carterville Illinois the “City of Homes” hosts New Year’s Eve bell ringing led by 53 year old Joe Scoby and his widowed mother Maggie. The pair own 500 to 600 bells including ancient Egyptian Basque and Japanese bells. Scoby began the tradition in 1963 drawing visitors from across the country and abroad, with police deployed to manage traffic and horn noise. He also rings bells on Veterans Day Independence Day and sometimes Patriot’s Day.
