Protestors march to bishop's home over priest dismissal
More than 30 demonstrators, black and white, gathered outside the Western Michigan Episcopal bishop's home in Kalamazoo on Christmas morning to protest the firing of Canon Nicholas Holt. Bishop Charles Bennett met with marchers from North Community Reformed Church, urging the bishop to reconsider Holt's removal as vicar of Cathedral Church of Christ the King and director of social relations. The crowd recalled Holt’s summer street ministry efforts to ease tensions among Negro youths, as signs lamented the church’s decision and questioned priorities amid the new cathedral’s construction.
