22 per cent Blue Shield hike draws sharp criticism
Washington faced sharp criticism as the Price Commission approved a 22 percent premium increase for Blue Cross Blue Shield federal employees. Rep. Jerome Waldie charged the hike is unjustified and excessive, saying the commission ignored data and staff recommendations for a much smaller rise. He noted families could lose coverage, and warned that the commission’s stance may invite similar increases from other insurers. Hearings will resume January 25 to review the inflationary impact, while Rep Hogan urged a 30 day delay to let Congress assess the issue.
