Long Beach Welcomes World No 1 Ore Carrier MV Long Beach Maru

The 705 foot Long Beach Maru, the world’s largest ore carrier and the only merchant ship named for Long Beach, arrived in Long Beach Harbor Sunday. It carries 58,248 tons of ore, was welcomed with city leaders and bands, and joined three Japanese ships setting a West Coast ore landing record.

Balloonists Plan Channel Flight First in Calif

A half dozen air balloonists plan to lift off from Catalina Island on January 11 for a 25 mile crossing to the mainland, aiming to be California’s first such flight. Organizer Richard A. Nab Driver of Stolen Ambulance

Officers pursued Perez in a police car after he allegedly stole an ambulance and flashed a red warning light. The chase ended at Wilmington Avenue and Alondra Boulevard, where Perez was returned to the hospital. Antonio Juarez, 36, linked to a knife attack on Hernandez, described Perez as involved. Hernandez was stabbed four times in the abdomen and once under the arm and remained in serious condition at Los Angeles County General Hospital.

Navy Wharf Proposal Delayed For Catalina Ship Lease

City officials reported Catalina Terminals offered a 25 year lease for the Navy Wharf with a temporary Pier 6 site during the 1964 season. Initial annual rent would be 50 000 for ten years totaling about 900 000, with 60 000 then 70 000 in later periods. Parking revenues were projected at 38 000 to 45 000 annually.

Christmas Afloat parade of 40000 watches Got Lost win

Forty thousand spectators lined Los Angeles Harbor for San Pedro’s first annual Christmas Afloat parade. Fifty seven private vessels cruised the channel from 7 to 9 pm as judges named Got Lost the sweepstakes winner. The yacht owned by Margaret J. Anspach and skippered by Pierre Menager featured two whale figures pulling Santa. Second prize went to Ralphin of the San Pedro Yacht Club, skippered by Rex Bobling, with a white Christmas tree and Santa. Third prize belonged to Carousel, skippered by Paul Ohldemacher, boasting a revolving carousel.
