Santa in South Pacific Kearsarge Carries the Christmas Mail
On USS Kearsarge the carrier handles mail for 3000 crewmen in a Vietnam war zone. Capt. Creighton Cook, MIT graduate, notes the ship’s pivotal role in delivering Christmas mail as winds reach 45 mph and 20 to 25 foot seas. The day features mail transfers with the USS Walke and Thomaston, a war room briefing, and a Miss Francis performance aboard. Postal chief Lt. Bob DuPont reports mail volumes around 26 tons in late November, with daily cycles from Subic Point and helicopters delivering bags to ships in the group.
