Mona Lisa Comes to Washington in High Security
In vault X of the National Gallery, the Mona Lisa rests under guard before a planned unveiling by President Kennedy. The 450-year-old Leonardo portrait travels from the Paris Louvre, via a seven car caravan, to the Capital and then to the Metropolitan Museum. The voyage, described as a gesture of amity, follows a decades old romance between White House reporter Edward T. Folliard and the painting, who secured the mission after meeting French cultural officials.
