Nixon era defense wish list nears $110 billion
Washington reports that upon taking the defense post, Melvin Laird would face a $100 to $110 billion package. The plan, similar to the Joint Chiefs of Staff list, seeks expanded missile defense, a new strategic bomber, sea based missiles, and upgraded tanks and barracks, with many projects delayed due to Vietnam costs. Laird plans a blue ribbon defense review and hopes Vietnam ends before his first budget.
