Britain Ends Power Slowdown Acknowledges Good Faith
Britain’s electrical workers called off a week of brownouts affecting about 55 million people after marathon talks with the government and Electricity Council. Union negotiator Frank Chapple described the move as an act of good faith while 125,600 power station workers sought 25 percent pay gains and the council offered 10. A national court of inquiry remained uncertain as Employment Minister Robert Carr scheduled further talks. Public relief followed, shops reopened, and lights slowly returned though outages and cold persisted in some areas.
