Washington reports the FTC ruled that clothing must bear permanent washing or cleaning instructions and gasoline pumps must display octane contents. The clothing rule starts next July 3 with exemptions possible for items under $3, and disposable paper labels may be allowed for sheer or delicate fabrics. The octane rule, pushed for approval 11 months ago, requires a revised formula averaging research and motor octane, generally two points lower than the current label. The ruling faces a court challenge by the National Petroleum Refiners Association.
