Soviet writers held for investigation amid Western publishing
The Soviet government acknowledged that writers Andrei Sinyavsky and Yuri Daniel, both about 40, are under investigation for reportedly smuggling their works to the West for publication. A spokesman for the Soviet Committee for Cultural Relations With Foreign Countries declined to say what charges may be brought or whether they will be tried. Confirmation came after Nobel laureate Mikhail Sholokhov said Sinyavsky awaits trial in Stockholm. Sinyavsky, a critic, published works abroad under Abram Tertz. Daniel, a translator, used Nikolai Arzhak.
