Paul Robeson Said Returning Home From Abroad
The ailing Paul Robeson, living in Berlin, is reported ready to return to the United States after five years abroad. Louis Lomax, who spent a week with Robeson, says Robeson is coming home soon in a deeper sense, not just physically. Robeson, 65, was accused by HUAC in 1947 of supporting Communist front groups and had his passport withdrawn in 1950 for refusing to sign a State Department affidavit later struck down by the Supreme Court. He moved to London in 1958, then went behind the Iron Curtain for medical care. His British agent hinted nervous strain, Robeson has refused to answer whether he is a Communist, asserting a constitutional right to belong to any party. He received the International Stalin Peace Prize in 1952, praising the Soviet Union.
