Ashmedai Berlin-Beckoned Opera Gets West Coast Premiere
New York City Opera presented the West Coast premiere of Josef Tal’s Ashmedai in the Music Center Pavilion with Israel Eliraz’s libretto. The satire blends Brechtian theater with Weill inspired music, using tape to evoke totalitarian control and cabaret-inflected staging. Gary Bertini conducts a strong cast led by John Langston, David Griffiths, Paul Ukenass, and Patricia Craig, though the second act lacks the first act’s dramatic force.
