Campuses Tighten Security as Crime Falls on Campus
New Haven reports colleges arming guards and teaching self defense as crime at campuses drops. Yale notes a 50 percent cut in resisted crimes after lighting, emergency phones, late shuttle service, and armed student aides patrolling lots. Michigan State, Chicago, Arizona, and Texas report further declines via patrols, locks, and security programs. Boston University cites 24 hour dorm entries and ID checks under its 300000 program.

Killing spree at Tidewater Riverwood Care Center
In Payallup Washington a 94 year old man, Albert Andre, shot two fellow patients dead and wounded a nurse before killing himself in his room at Riverwood Care Center. Victims were Louis Schoenbachler, 70, and Orval Holthusen, 77. Nurse Patricia Carman was wounded. Police note no known violent history and seek motive. The weapon was an old Jer Johnson revolver of 1896 patent. The man left a barely legible note with a Tacoma phone number and the word goodbye. Police have a theory for the sudden turn to violence.

The United States will supply used Grumman Tracker patrol aircraft to replace Australian navy planes damaged in a hangar fire at Nowra. Twelve of thirteen planes were destroyed, one was under maintenance. A board of inquiry will investigate the blaze. Ambassador Hargrove assured help, with $73,000 per plane offered as emergency replacements versus $1 million for new airframes. Opposition spokesman Hayden called it a major pure scandal. Whitlam pressed Kilken to explain northern waters surveillance.
