Nation awards Kennedy and Pope posthumously with freedom honors

The Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civil honor, was awarded posthumously to John F. Kennedy and Pope John XXIII in a White House ceremony watched by Jacqueline Kennedy. The award honors their work for peace and national service while the president’s legacy and other notable figures were acknowledged. The event also honored 31 leaders from government, science, business, and the arts, as the Kennedy family observed the proceedings with somber reverence.
